Understanding why self esteem is important is a first step to helping yourself improve it. If you can understand its importance to you, then you are more likely to give it top priority and start working on it seriously. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After writing about this topic for over 20 years, having a book published, and working with life coaching clients lacking self-esteem, it seems clear to me that it is very important in so many ways. On this page, I’d like to explain why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Leary (1999), self-esteem is important because it contributes to psychological well-being, better relationships, good health, and a positive identity. High self-esteem helps us to approach life positively and set goals. It also helps us become self-motivated, confident, and successful.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The most basic task for one’s mental, emotional and social health, which begins in infancy and continues until one dies, is the construction of his\/her positive self-esteem. <\/p> [(Macdonald, 1994), p. 19]<\/p><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n However, there is some research, strangely, that seems to contradict the long-held view that self-esteem is important for positive living and success in life (see this article<\/a> by Ziegler-Hill, 2013). <\/p>\n\n\n\n I do, however, believe that the overwhelming majority of research carried out by the many experts in this field, together with my own experience, shows that positive self esteem has benefits in many areas of life and affects our attitude and psychology deeply. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
