Can positive words build self esteem? This is one of the main questions we will consider here on this page. According to the Bible, God created the world with words. This report, published by the Association for Talent Development and written by Blitzer et al., mentions how important words are in building the self-esteem of employees.
As a life coach, published author, and former sufferer of low self esteem and depression, I know how life-changing words can be. Think about how others’ words can affect you either positively or negatively.
It is a good idea to use quotes to build self esteem. inspiration quotes at work, or home can help you feel better about yourself. The words of a friend, or a family member can boost your self-confidence. Self esteem quotes can have a profound effect on our thoughts and behaviour.
But before we take a look at some wonderful words that will inspire you to build your self-esteem, take a moment to think about how powerful words can be. As with all things, self esteem and even happiness, come from within you. From within your heart. Words, whether in a poem, a positive quote, those spoken by someone, words in a book or in a movie, all have their own power.
Words can shock, inspire, energize, encourage, discourage, motivate or de-motivate you.
Words can make you laugh, smile, cry or think. Words can make you happy or unhappy, angry or relaxed, calm or nervous. Words can cause emotions and feelings or take them away. Words portray ideas and concepts. We use them to explain, to help, to hurt, to love and to entertain. Words are the best way to express our thoughts and feelings about our experiences and about our future hopes and intentions. Words are a crucial part of building your self-esteem and confidence. Words affect real change in our lives or they can stop us.
The Power of Words Can Motivate You or Hurt Your Confidence
Words are indeed powerful, you only have to think back to a time someone said something to you that hurt. Has anyone ever said anything that knocked your confidence? I bet they have, as it happens to the best of us at some point. On the other hand, words can encourage you and motivate you, they can inspire you to be a better version of yourself. Think of someone who had a positive effect on you, perhaps a great teacher or someone you are very close to.
“One must always be careful of books,” said Tessa, “and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us.”Cassandra Clare, Clockwork Angel
If you constantly criticize yourself or tell yourself you are not good enough then your self esteem suffers. On the other hand, positive words inside your head can really lift you and encourage you. This is why negative self-talk can be so important. Make sure that you use your own inner words to support yourself and not resort to self-criticism. Reading inspirational books or poems can encourage you to think more positive thoughts and to feel more confident.
It’s not just your own self criticism you need help with if you suffer from low self esteem. Knowing how to cope with criticism from others can change your life!
Positive words can help boost your confidence. In an article written by Honig and Sterling (2000), teachers are encouraged to use positive words to promote confidence in young children. In particular, the article shows how words which acknowledge positive attributes in children are very effective at building confidence. An example would be “you are a helpful and kind person who enjoys sharing with others”.
Self hypnosis is another amazingly effective way to change the way you think and feel. It is a highly successful technique because it uses the positive power of words on your mind and body.

Inspiring Books Can Help You Use Positive Thinking To Improve Your Life
For me personally, when I faced depression and low self-esteem, I needed ways to help change my negativity into positivity and I chose words as the tool I would use. Let me explain.
I read inspiring books and listened to audiobooks and set my mind on a program of renewal and education into methods that not only boost self esteem but encourage more positive thinking. This helped to bring me to a place where I found the hope I needed to face my problems, both physical and mental. You can do the same as I did!
The first thing I recommend is to read books filled with positive inspiring words that will allow you to rediscover joy and love in your world. A great one to start with is I Needed This Today: Words to Live by Hoda Kotb. . Let your Creativity out! Your Self esteem Will Thank You!
The following piece is from my newsletter, (click here to sign up), which I sent out in July 2002 and talks about the value of creativity. Your creativity makes you unique and will help to inspire you to more self esteem. Here is the message I sent out:
If you realise your creative potential you will be happier and increase your level of self esteem. In this article below, I will explain the importance of being creative and how developing your creativity will benefit you.
You have a creative urge within. We all do. Don’t ignore it or you will feel you are “cheating” yourself. Find time to satisfy this deep need to create within yourself.
I took up oil painting about five months ago (this was in 2002!). It was something I had always wanted to do, but somehow I never found the time. I decided to make the time. Now I have five paintings to show for my efforts! I am very satisfied with these, and when friends comment positively on them, guess what? My self esteem receives a sudden boost. Others are confirming I have achieved something, I am special and have a talent I have newly discovered. I always suspected I had this talent, now I have proved it to myself. Maybe I can even achieve greater things! This is the unlimited positive power of creativity!
Maybe you have talents and you don’t know about them yet. Maybe there is something creative you want to take up. Don’t delay – you can find the time – it’s worth it!
Investing your precious time into a new hobby or activity which requires creativity can lead to self-discovery and a new-found sense of confidence and self-esteem, so take the chance when it presents itself.
Now, all these years later, I have taken up a new hobby and it is both challenging and creative. Take a look at some of the photos I have produced from my new pastime, astrophotography. I’d love to hear what you think of my efforts, or about what hobby you have started. Send me a message and let me know about your new hobby.
